What is the best digital camera to use for wildlife photography in the $300-$450 range?

I will be moving to Montana in a month and I am looking forward to taking a lot of wildlife pictures. I am looking for a camera with enough zoom to take quality photos of wildlife but I do not want to spend $600+ to get into the DSLR market. I have been looking at the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ18K Digital Camera and the Olympus SP570UZ. The Panasonic has 18x optical zoom and the Olympus has 20x. Does anyone have any comments about which camera would be better? Or could you suggest another model that would work well for wildlife? Thanks a lot.

Those you have mentioned are okay, but not suited for wild life because they have slow focusing, as do all p&s cameras. Although you have a good zoom lens on those cameras, they are bound to miss many shots due to subject movement.

It's better to go with an SLR with a telephoto lens. I don't think many wildlife photographers would carry anything less than an SLR.

Mr. Joho, there are couple of questions I need to ask from you regarding DSLR.1. Lens kit supplied to entry level DSLR like Canon 400D is 18-55mm, means that this is a very short range, same as optical zoom 0x – 2x. Do I need to buy more telephoto zoom lenses with longer range? (like 10x on DC optical zoom)?2. DSLR with image stabilizer is better or just tuning up the ISO settings? But high ISO increases noise and not as effective as image stabilzer?3. Canon kit lens is 18-55mm and Nikon D80 kit lens is 18 – 200mm, does this means that Nikon is suit for more zoom range? But large zoom kit lens is not as good quality as small zoom kit lens?

  • wiehlborg says:

Having a big zoom lens is nice and all but for me it would amount to nothing if it let enough light in (big You should try and invest in a nice prime lens. a lot cheaper than most zooms out there and just get breath taking results almost On my digital Nikon D3000 I use the 35mm 1.8 AF-S G lens, pretty cheap lens but was a work horse for a long time.

  • lairoch says:

I am a photographer and rarely use the "machine-gun" method of shooting.

Actually shooting at the peak of action is a much more accurate way to get the best shots and usually when shooting continuous the shot you really want is "between" the ones you get shooting continuously.

Unless you are shooting for an end product that will be an animated GIF, the frame per second rate is not too relevant.

My DSLR can shoot at 11 fps and is excellent for making animated GIF files, but again, when shooting I usually shoot any faster than one shot every two to five seconds during the "action"

Wildlife photography is a slow painstaking event and a wildlife photographer sometimes only shoots one shot in half an hour, sitting in a blind with their long lens sitting on a tripod

There is a of this "fps" question that has not been addressed and you may have to take a memory card into a store and test for. That is the buffer in the camera.

Unless the camera has a large enough buffer, shooting at 3.4 or 4 fps means nothing if the buffer is small and fills after [...]
